At the beginning of the novel, Manuel has disappeared, and actually the reader will mostly learn what Manuel is like through flashbacks and inferences. There's a lot of good information in this book about the history of Victoria's life.. The text is blochy heavy seriffed and is difficult to read. This book is for every "artist" who struggles w/ the "blues" or depression, yet knows that traditional medicine and therapy won't help much. It made for a lot of ultraviolence and Vivian's story is detailed by his son Duane, even though anyone who reads it and is familar with the era knows that this was Vivians work. He tackles apostate topics but holds firm to simplistic symbols keeping himself attached to the surface.
Homosexuality is just one of the elements of the story - not the main focus. Be sure you are buying the 2014 edition and not the 2012 edition as the laws have changed significantly. My first thought was--Well why aren't you going to your husband with these fears? But okays
